There have been celebrations at The Beacon School as the number of top grades almost doubled in this year’s GCSE results.
Students at the Banstead school have been collecting their envelopes this morning and there has been some great news for them. The number of top Grade 9 results jumped from 18 to 34 and the number of Grade 8s from 56 to 69.

Abby Osborne was delighted to receive two Grade 9s, four Grade 7s and three Grade 6s.

"It’s just a relief to get them. I was shaking so much! Definitely pleased with history and English."

Evie MacKenzie also did brilliantly with a huge eight Grade 9s  and two Grade 8s. She's aiming for a career in medicine and is staying at Beacon Sixth form to do chemistry, biology and English Literature.

"It's like you have 5 years without reassurance but now on paper I can say to myself that I can definitely do it."

Keith Batchelor, Headteacher, said: “We are delighted that the hard work of students and staff has paid off this summer. It has been a delight to share the news with them this morning.

“We are especially pleased with the very significant increase in the top grades of 8s and 9s.  We look forward to welcoming them into our sixth form.”

James Ford received a Grade  9 and a Grade 8 in science and 8s in maths and computing.

"I'm looking to go into software development. The teachers here always go one step further for you. I was scared to open the envelope. I was going to go away and open it but my friend wanted to do it together so we did."

Abby Osborne got 2 9s, 4 7s and 3 6s and said: "It’s just a relief to get them. I was shaking so much! Definitely pleased with history and English."

Evie MacKenzie did brilliantly - 8 9s! Plus 2 8s. She's aiming for a career in medicine and is staying at Beacon Sixth form to do chemistry, biology and English Literature.

"It's like you have 5 years without reassurance but now on paper I can say to myself that I can definitely do it."

Hannah Craig got 3 9s, in English Lang, English Lit and history. She said: "I was so nervous, I've been up since 5! The teachers have been so good to me, especially my English teacher Miss Brown. She's just so helpful."

Lara Jarman got 9s in English Language and history, plus 8s in Spanish and English Literature. "I'm really pleased with history. I loved it so much and I'm just glad I did well."
Brandon Sadler got a 9 in English Literature plus 3 8s and 4 7s, including drama.

"I was most pleased with drama. I knew I'd done well with the practical but was worried I'd flunked the written but I did better than I thought. The teachers are all supportive. Any time you want to work after school they'll stay for you and even if there's big groups they'll always give you 10-15 minutes one to one."

Brandon is staying on at Beacon Sixth form to do drama, film and geography.
