Students at Beacon School in Banstead have been celebrating some excellent GCSE results.

Students at The Beacon School in Banstead enjoyed some excellent success in their GCSEs, despite the more challenging exams in core subjects.

Two-thirds passed in English and Maths, many at the very top end of the new numerical grading system of 1-9, with the school achieving 14 grade 9s and 30 grade 8s at the top end.

The English Literature results held up from last year, even with much more demanding requirements and there were 100% pass rates in PE and drama, while half of the grades in religious studies and textiles were A* or As.

There were particular success stories for individual students. Eden Walsh achieved two grade nines, along with four A*s and three As, Charlotte Ellis achieved a grade nine, grade eight, three A*s and three As and James Stephens was among the top performing boys with two grade nines, one grade eight and four As.

Hannah Strank, who got two nines, an eight, two A*s and four As, said: “I wasn’t expecting those results. I was really nervous and when I got them I just burst into tears!”

Sophie Read, who achieved two eights as well as two A*s and four As, added: “The teachers have been really amazing. We knew we could always go to them for extra help.”

The Beacon has a successful sixth form, which showed strong A-Level results last week, and a number are staying on at the school.

Adam Forrest is one, taking maths, science, and computer science, after achieving five As, three Bs and a C.

He said: “I know the teachers and how the school works. I will be able to learn more in a more focused environment.”

Russell Bennett, principal, said, “Our students worked so well with the new examination demands and clearly excelled in many areas of the curriculum.
“It is a real achievement to be awarded the very top scores as many have this year. The whole staff and I are very proud of our young people.
“For those staying on to the Sixth Form here, we are looking forward to building on these successes next term.”
